Sea Creatures

The sea creatures I encounter are part of the appeal of diving and sailing. They are beautiful, fascinating and often very amusing. I feel privileged to have seen so many with my own eyes.

Diving with Manta Rays the size of a Star Wars Enterprise ship only meters above me. Witnessing gentle sea turtles coming ashore to lay their eggs, then seeing these hatch and teeny, tiny turtles scurrying off towards a vast ocean. Snorkelling with a 5-meter-long Whale Shark. The vibrant colours of Parrotfish. A squadron of squid shadowing me and pretending they weren’t. Feisty fish protecting their piece of coral against another one 10 times larger than themselves. The shy beauty of a seahorse no bigger than my thumbnail. The excitement of seeing a perfectly camouflaged Frogfish.

And don’t forget Octopus! Highly intelligent, magical, beautiful creatures. Probably my favourite.

Below are only sketches and musings. One day I’ll develop them into something more substantial. I want to share this wonder of the natural world, hidden from sight below the surface. Our delicate world needs to be celebrated and protected, I strongly believe art can help raise awareness for our salty friends in a fun and colourful way.
